In this episode of Let's Talk Death Podcast by Healgrief.org, Barbara shares an experience from when she was a 16-year-old nurse’s aide asked to sit with someone dying. Terrified to do so, she was told to let them know, meaning the nurse’s station, when the person died.

This was such a great interview Barbara. I am a Soul Midwife (Felicity Warner UK). I was surprised to hear that you hadn’t been working in the healthcare system prior to your work with Hospice. I believe this gave you an advantage to observe rather than “fix. I have found and believe that dying is more a spiritual and emotional event than a physical one. The body knows how to die. As you eluded to, people die the same way (unless it’s a traumatic death) but it’s very individual with regards to their spiritual and emotional journey. It’s very mystical and I feel fortunate to be able to work with the dying. I have been a rural hospice nurse for over 10 years. The booklet Gone From My Sight has been a primary tool to help hundreds of family members and caregivers understand and feel confident in caring for their loved one through the dying process. I feel this tool along with extensive support also helps people in there bereavement process as well!!

Being in the present moment nonjudgmentally with the dying is both the loneliest and most complete I have ever felt. Grateful to have found volunteering for Hospice 20 years ago. I hope the Peace I found can be shared with those who are on this journey.
